Cecil College Soccer's Success Spans the Globe
NORTH EAST - The 2024 Cecil College men's soccer season is arguably the greatest in recorded program history (2000-present).
Cecil's year was highlighted by both team and individual success. The Seahawks won a program record seven contests, breaking the previous record from the mid-2000s and besting their win total from the last two seasons combined. Cecil knocked off five Region 20 opponents, the most in their modern era, and were within striking distance of adding a few more wins.
The Seahawks offense shined throughout the year, finishing second in goals and assists among R20 Division 2 programs. 13 players scored at least one goal, while 15 chipped in one assist or more. Leading the front line for the Seahawks were sophomores Ronaldo King and Izak Battle Jr. King, a Trinidad & Tobago native, finished the year with a single-season record 14 goals and ends his career as Cecil's all-time leading goal scorer (20). Battle Jr., a Maryland born forward, tallied 13 goals on the year and 17 for his career to finish just behind King in both categories.
"Izak and I had a friendly competition going all season," said King. "We talked after freshman season and wanted to push each other to get better. I feel like we accomplished that."
"Ronaldo is the fastest person I have ever played with," said freshman midfielder Jannis Braun. "Between his speed, and Izak's consistency and steadiness, we could not have asked for much more up top."
Moving to the midfield, it was both Braun and fellow German frosh Bent Althoff who steered the team all season long. Braun made history of his own, shattering Cecil's single-season and all-time program record's with 10 assists. Althoff finished with eight assists and edged Braun in goals (seven to five). Despite living in different parts of the same country, the two connected quickly and found a home hear at Cecil.
"I am really greatful to have found a home here at Cecil," said Althoff. "Despite being from a different part of the world, we were able to really bond with the team. It is thanks to guys like Ronaldo, Izak, J'Hayden Sealey, and others that made Jannis and I feel welcomed here."
"We knew to expect great things when Jannis and Bent had the ball," said Battle Jr. "It was a blessing to play alongside both of them this season."
