Frederick Spoils Cecil's Comeback
FREDERICK - No. 5 seed Cecil College softball had its season come to a close on Wednesday, dropping game three of the best of three series to No. 4 Frederick in the opening round of the Region 20 Division 2 Tournament.
Briana Rebman's two-run blast in the opening frame put Cecil ahead early. After keeping Frederick off the board in the first two innings, the Seahawks surrendured a half-dozen runs to the Cougars in the third and three more in the fifth. This put the hosts up 9-2 through five.
Cecil began its climb back in the sixth. Sloane Tanner singled to start the rally, but the next two batters popped out. After an Amaia Smith single scored Tanner from second, a Frederick fielding error allowed Layla Hopkins to reach safely and extend the inning. The Seahawks made them pay with another RBI single, then a wild pitch scored Hopkins for the third run of the frame. Smith stepped to the circle and put Frederick down in order to end the sixth. With just three outs to work with, Cecil needed at least four runs to extend the contest.
Two walks and a double from Tanner put Cecil in a strong position to start the frame. This loaded the bases for Tristan Canavan, and freshman catcher capitalized on the opportunity by flairing the ball down the left field line and scoring a pair. Smith followed Canavan and helped her own cause, ripping a pitch to center that scored Briana Rebman. Frederick's infield overthrew the catcher on the same play, sending Canavan home to tie the game at 9-9. Cecil's offense was halted from there, as the Cougars sat the next two batters down via pop out.
Looking to head into extra innings, the Seahawks sent out Smith once more for the bottom of the seventh. The sophomore lefty forced the first Cougar to fly out, but a pair of base knocks put two on. A second fly out put Cecil one out away from extended the game, but Frederick's Leo Cline slashed a double to center deep enough to score the runner from second, giving the Cougars a 10-9 victory.
The Seahawks finish 2025 with a 19-14 record.
