Cecil Softball Closes Out Historic 2026 Season
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Cecil softball had its historic 2026 campaign end on Wednesday evening, as the No. 20 seed Seahawks dropped an 8-1 contest to the No. 14 seed Parkland Cobras during day two of the NJCAA World Series.
After a scoreless first inning, Cecil (23-12) could not keep Parkland off the board in the middle innings. The Cobras went on to score eight runs across the next four frames, including a base clearing triple in the third. The Seahawks squandered a chance to score in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with two outs before Parkland would get out of the jam.
Down 8-0, the Seahawks pushed away the threat of the mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth. Malea Ferdinando led the inning off with a walk, then Kendel Leonardi followed her up with a single. Keira Fendt moved the runners over via sacrifice bunt and brought the Seahawks back to the top of the order. Taja Souza worked the count full, then punched a ball to left for a sacrifice fly to drive home Ferdinando.
A pitching change from Parkland led to Cecil threatening to score again in the sixth. Gabriella Smith walked with one out, then Riley deRoulac singled with two down. A ground out to the next better ended the rally.
Taylor Stapleford held the Cobras off the scoreboard again in the seventh, but the Seahawks went down in order in the bottom of the inning to end the season.
